BGBL Code of Conduct

Updated 12/8/20:

The BGBL believes that all participants have a right to a safe and healthy environment to participate in
sports and recreational activities. BGBL officials, athletes, spectators, and guests have an obligation to
promote mutual respect, tolerance, and acceptance. BGBL expects ALL to abide by the following code of
conduct during BGBL sponsored leagues/events and situations arising from BGBL events.

The essence of good ethical conduct and practice is summarized below.

PLAYERS:

  • Promote the reputation of BGBL and take all possible steps to prevent our organization from being brought into disrepute.
  • Not use foul or abusive language or gestures toward league and game officials, players, managers, or spectators.
  • Not take any action which is likely to intimidate, offend, insult, humiliate, or discriminate against participants, league and game officials, or spectators based on sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, race, disability, age, religious or political belief, ethnic origin, social background, language, or marital status through words or action.
  • Not possess weapons during league play or BGBL sponsored events.
  • Not act in a way that creates an unsafe environment for themselves or others during league play or events, including being intoxicated.
  • Follow the policies and expectations of all venues at which BGBL sports or events are held.
  • Recognize and appreciate the efforts made by Coaches, Officials and the BGBL Board in providing the opportunity for you to play the game and enjoy the sporting environment.
  • Ensure that the game is played and conducted in accordance with disciplined and sporting behavior and acknowledge that it is not sufficient to rely solely upon Officials to maintain those principles.
  • Not repeatedly breach the laws of the game.
  • Accept and observe the authority and decisions of Officials and all other Board Members.
  • Display consistently high standards of behavior.
  • Play for fun and enjoyment.
  • Learn and play by the rules.
  • Recognize and applaud all good play.
  • Be a good sport – win with modesty, lose with dignity.
  • Cooperate with coach, teammates, and opponents.

Any individual ejected from a game, will serve the next game as a suspension (not allowed inside the gym) and two ejections from a game within the season may result with removal from the league.

Those who witness acts in violations of the code of conduct should take steps to intervene if it is safe to do so. Violations should be reported immediately to game or league officials. All reports will be promptly and appropriately investigated.

Violations of the code may result in sanctions up to and including suspension/expulsion from the BGBL.

OFFICIALS AND COACHES:

  • Consider the wellbeing and safety of participants before the development of performance.
  • Develop an appropriate working relationship with participants, based on mutual trust and respect.
  • Make sure all activities are appropriate to the age, ability, and experience of those taking part.

  • Display consistently high standards of behavior and appearance.
  • Never exert undue influence over performers to obtain personal benefit or reward.
  • Never condone rule violations, rough play, or the use of prohibited substances.
