BGBL Mission & Description of Play

BGBL Mission

The BGBL – BOSTON GLBTQ BASKETBALL LEAGUE provides a welcoming and fun environment for the community and its allies to enjoy the game of basketball. The BGBL promotes fairness and camaraderie and is free from any and all discrimination. Season after season, we strengthen diversity and tolerance within athletics and our larger community.

Each year, new and returning players from diverse backgrounds join to overcome obstacles, have fun, and build friendships. In addition, the BGBL hosts events with partner Boston non-profits who also advocate for social justice and historically oppressed communities.

Since 1994, the BGBL has played an integral role in expanding safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community in the Boston area, fostering community, and inspiring future generations. We offer two divisions of play for all experience levels, including beginners are welcome!

Description of Play

Division 1 (Experienced Competition)

The Division 1 Basketball Program offers experienced basketball players a higher level of competitive play against other players who have a firm grasp on the fundamentals of basketball and who are able to compete at varying levels of skill beyond novice; ranging from former collegiate or high school basketball experience to the skilled backyard competitor. The D1 Program aims to create a fun and constructive environment dedicated to enhanced competition, player improvement, and with an emphasis on Team success over any one individual. Open to ALL 18+ players who have at least intermediate basketball experience and prefer a more highly fast-paced competitive Team environment.

Division 2 (Recreational Competition)

The Division 2 Basketball Program is dedicated to developing all aspects of a player’s game and is designed to teach and develop fundamental basketball skills in a fun Team environment that promotes a friendly level of competent competition in a safe and instructional setting. Open to ALL 18+ players from novice (never played) to those with intermediate basketball experience or less (former grade school leagues, basketball camps, and leagues).
